Sammanfattning

Based on systematic reviews on the evidence relating sugars to obesity and dental caries, the World Health Organization has issued updated guidelines for sugar intake in children and adults. There is a strong recommendation that the intake of free sugars should not exceed 10% of the total energy per day, corresponding to not more than 4 tablespoons (around 50 gram). A further reduction of free sugars intake to below 5% is conditionally recommended to preserve dental health throughout life. Free sugars include mono- and disaccharides added to foods and beverages by the manufacturer, processor and consumer. Also sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates are regarded as free. Embracing these guidelines, dental professionals should work actively together with general health professionals to reduce sugar intake in the general population as well as among their individual patients.
