Sammanfattning

Parents with substance abuse problems and their children were interviewed, aiming at in-depth knowledge of how perspectives of children and their parents relate to one another. Family patterns of similarities and differences between parents’ and children’s perspectives vary, but there are also certain tendencies. Children describe more deviant behavior of their parent during intoxication and more serious consequences such as overdoses, suicide attempts, abandonment, violence and threats, etc. Children’s agency is also more visible in the children’s interview. Maybe more time has to pass after the abuse has stopped before parents can see the consequences of their addiction for the children. The child’s position provides a different perspective and children do not have the same reason to reduce negative impact of the abuse.
