Sammanfattning

It is well known that an extensive use and abuse of legal substances like alcohol and tobacco may have serious consequences for the general and oral health. Likewise, long-term use and abuse of illegal drugs like cannabis, amphetamine, cocaine and ecstasy may also be related to significant health problems, including increased risk of developing dental caries, dental erosion, periodontitis, xerostomia, salivary gland hypofunction and bruxism. Moreover, use and abuse of illegal drugs is often associated with abuse of legal drugs which aggravates the negative consequences for the health. Cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug worldwide, and in Denmark, the use of cannabis has been increasing during the past few years, especially among adolescents and those adults below 25 years. The present paper focuses on how some of the most commonly abused illegal drugs can affect the oral health.
