Sammanfattning
Serious illness leads to changes in an individual’s life circumstances, work, roles and relationships with family and friends. Consequently, experiences of lack of comprehension, unmanageability and meaninglessness may be the result. When serious illness occurs, being in hospital receiving professional healthcare is good. In hospitals, healthcare professionals have knowledge and focus on correct diagnosis and effective treatment. Nevertheless, the trajectory during diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation is often demanding. Moreover, recovery from serious illness makes great demands on the ability to cope. Studies have shown that seriously ill patients with a high score in sense of coherence (SOC) have better mastering abilities and recover more quickly. A high SOC is also associated with better mental health and quality of life compared to those who score low on SOC. Based on Antonovsky's salutogenic theory on sense of coherence this article discusses how health care professionals in hospitals may promote patient’s coping and health.
