Where you choose to publish your research results is important for the nursing profession and the nursing practice; however, it is also important for your own career as a researcher. Nursing researchers early in their careers can obtain advice from experienced researchers, but they can also assess the quality of scientific journals and develop a publishing strategy. The increase in the number of scientific journals in the past five years makes the process of selecting publishing journal even more complex and challenging for researchers, especially those early in their careers. A search for relevant literature resulted in commentaries, discussion papers, and editorial comments on nursing. The literature is reviewed, summarized, and discussed. This article presents some tools and assessment techniques that may help you make some important assessments of journals before the manuscript is submitted to the selected journal for peer review. The article looks especially at matters that may be important to consider regarding the nursing profession and a future career as a researcher.
