Sammanfattning
Tobacco induced oral health conditions are important public
health problems. This article focuses on 1. The use of tobacco in
Denmark and Europe; 2. The work of WHO in tobacco prevention
and 3. The unique role of dentists in the prevention of tobacco related
diseases. In total, 16 % of the adult population in Denmark
use tobacco every day and 2 % use smoke-free tobacco. Use of
e-cigarettes containing nicotine is attractive to young people. The
use of tobacco is moderate in Nordic countries while the level is
higher in Central and Eastern Europe. Dentists play a vital role in
tobacco prevention and in 2017 WHO published three reports to
strengthen the prevention of use of tobacco. Update evidence
about the health hazards of the mouth is described, and benefits
of tobacco cessation are outlined. The reports emphasise
key preventive strategies in tobacco use among oral disease patients.
Dentists may contribute to the raising awareness of health
hazards associated with tobacco use, and assist in public health
programmes by providing knowledge about the health benefits of
ceasing tobacco use.
