Sammanfattning

Following the recent increase of migration to Europe, a number of important questions related to the physician’s professional ethics have come into sharp view. To what extent can the State demand that doctors participate in adminstrative measures that are difficult to reconcile with professional codes of conduct and fundamental human rights principles like non-discrimination? In Sweden, the discussion has centered on the involvment of physicians in age assessments and forced deportations. The ethical analyses made by official authorities in this regard are not without merit. However, they lack a historical perspective and fail to consider the close ties between professional ethics and human rights. The situation is serious, and a deepened analysis is utterly needed within the frame of an ongoing dialogue between doctors, authorities and politicians.
