Sammanfattning

There is increasing concern due to the growth in reports of antibiotic resistant bacteria in small animal practice, -especially MRSA/MRSP. This is also seen in Norway. From a veterinary viewpoint, there is a worry about the risk of contamination with multiresistent bacteria between family animals and humans. This paper gives a short historic summary of the development of multi-resistant bacteria in human and veterinary medicine. Further the paper describes the small veterinary practitioners’ prescription of antibiotic drugs and the guidelines available for appropriate antibiotic use. Special problems in medication of dogs and cats are highlighted, and also challenges concerning microbiological sampling, the use of various laboratories and the doubts whether or not to prescribe antibiotics, illustrated with cases. It is essential that veterinarians have substantial knowledge of how multi-resistent bacteria develop, and following guidelines for appropriate use of antibiotics is imperative. The education of specialists in small veterinary practice might have an impact on the practice policy in antibiotic treatment. The fact that there is no obligation to report MRSP and that the different clinical practices use various laboratories implies that the real amount of MRSP-cases in clinical cases in Norway is unknown.
