Sammanfattning

Sustainability involves ecological, social and economic aspects and their mutual interaction. Here the focus is our relationship to, and treatment of, (other) animals and how an expanded understanding can shed new light on UNs’ sustainability goals and factors related to social sustainability (e.g. diversity, empathy and compassion). One (daunting) example of the interconnectedness between humans, animals and nature is the meat industry. Acknowledging the animal’s perspective confers an exploration of human psychological and social mechanisms that direct behavior, such as speciesism, karnism and cognitive dissonance, that impact the attitude toward animals and humans seen as “the others”. Luckily, such increased awareness does also point at more sustainable approaches regarding how we interact with and treat other animals.
