Sammanfattning
Main message: Hopes, dreams and a belief that the individual can lead a contented and fulfilling life in spite of severe mental illness are essential elements in recovery processes.
Method: Semi-structured qualitative research interviews with 50 forensic psychiatric patients.
Findings: Forensic psychiatric patients have many hopes and dreams for the future and are keen to speak of them. Most of the goals, hopes and dreams reported by the informants concern basic human needs. The informants in the study have to a great extent adapted their dreams for the future to the actual situation they currently find themselves in. For many of them, this means that they have lowered their expectations for the future. For the majority, their dreams for the future tend to be relatively tangible, are short-term and their hopes concern socially accepted aspirations and relationships.
Implications for nursing: The psychiatric nurse must be able to verbalise and sustain hopes and dreams for the individual patient, including those with a high degree of complexity, dual or triple issues in the form of clinical disorder/offending/substance abuse and a high risk of relapse.
