Sammanfattning
BACKGROUND – Orthodontic treatment of adults is much more
frequent today than previously. The most popular system is
Invisalign. Here the treatment is carried out by transparent
aligners instead of fixed appliances. The applicability of the
Invisalign system has been discussed. It seems that it is able
to correct irregular front teeth with normal molar occlusion,
and no discrepancies in the jawbone. In the present article,
concerning two patient cases, crowding of front teeth was
treated with the Invisalign system; however, adverse effects in
form of open occlusion in the premolar-/molar regions arose.
CASE STUDIES – Two young adults with crowding of the
teeth in the front regions and normal molar occlusion were
treated with Invisalign by use of 20 and 21 sets of aligners,
respectively. In both cases satisfying positions of the anterior
teeth were achieved. Yet, in both cases the occlusion
in the side regions opened. Concerning the first case the
malocclusion improved by itself without being fully normal
after a retention period of 2 years aligners for night use,
while in the other case a refinement was necessary by use
of 14 sets of aligners. After 3 years of treatment the occlusion
was still open in the left side before retention with
bonded wires.
CONCLUSION – Crowding of front teeth can be corrected by
use of the Invisaling system, but unintended movements of
teeth may arise, and result in malocclusion, even in cases
within the scope of indication.
