Sammanfattning
The majority of all dental injuries occur during the younger years and studies from different parts of the world show a prevalence between 6–58%. A Swedish study shows that one-fifth of all school-aged children receive more than one injury. Dental injuries in school-aged children often causes a stressful situation for both the child and caregivers. An injured child may be difficult to examine depending on age, fear or immaturity. A good prognosis is possible with immediate treatment, an accurate diagnosis and carefully planned follow-ups. The purpose of the emergency treatment of dental trauma should be to eliminate pain and create optimum healing conditions. Trauma in the permanent dentition is divided into soft tissue, hard tissue and supporting tissue injuries. The same patient often has several types of injuries. After emergency treatment, a risk assessment for trauma complications should made.
