Sammanfattning

The presence of a vertebral fracture is known to increase the risk of new vertebral- and hip fractures. Vertebral fractures have been detected in patients under the age of 60 years and in patients with normal bone mineral density values. Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) is found to have acceptable sensitivity and specificity, and it makes it possible to detect vertebral fractures in patients referred for examination of osteoporosis, in a cost-effective and safe manner. Based on the results of a literature study, we conclude, that the use of VFA will optimise osteoporosis evaluation.
