Sammanfattning
Future estimates indicate shortage of health professionals in Norway and in the Western world. Hence, keeping qualified health professionals is important. The topic of this study is moral distress, and factors that are associated with moral distress among nurses in hospital wards. We conducted a cross-sectional study in spring 2017 and 247 nurses returned the questionnaire. Moral distress was measured with the Moral Distress Thermometer. We conducted correlation analyses, t-tests and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that moral distress was common among nurses. Nurses experienced more moral distress in medical than surgical wards. Contextual factors like the nurses’ ward affiliation and lack of staffing were more associated with their perception of moral distress, than individual factors like the nurses’ age, educational level and duration of their current position. Since contextual factors were of most importance, we recommend managers in hospital wards to take action to reduce moral distress.
