Clinical forensic oral examination at «Statens Barnahus» is a new professional procedure for dentist´s examination of teeth, oral cavity, head and neck. «Statens Barnahus» is specially child-friendly and equipped clinic for medical and psychological examinations of children suspected of being exposed to or witnessing violence and/or sexual abuse. The clinical forensic oral examination has been implemented at several «Statens Barnahus» in Norway. The aim of the study was, through interviews with different professions engaged by «Statens Barnahus» (i) to gather experience from the implementation of the clinical forensic oral examination (ii) to explore how the interaction between the various professions works. Two focus group interviews with the various professions engaged by «Statens Barnahus» were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively. The results show a positive attitude towards the use of the new procedure. Challenges reported were related to information flow and interaction between professions, sufficient background information and insight into the case given to the dentist, and to ensure competent dentists available when needed for examinations.
Conducting clinical forensic examination at the Statens Barnahus provide new and important insight into cases where children and adolescents are suspected of violence and / or sexual abuse. The adequate competence of the dentist at «Statens Barnehus» and good cross-professional interaction seems to be important success factors.
