Sammanfattning
A number of studies have shown
that patients with pain normally
constitute a major part of patients
seeking medical care. Therefore,
a deeper understanding of
analysis and treatment of pain is
essential for all medical staff. The
purpose of this study was to evaluate
the actual knowledge about
pain and its treatment as well as
the strive for such knowledge of
nurses practising in a medical
ward. Information was obtained
using a questionnaire with structured
and unstructured questions,
which was answered by 24 nurses.
The questions were designed
to assess the knowledge of nurses
in the subject; if different concepts
of painphysiology were well
known to them, their knowledge
about different kinds of analgetics
for different states of pain and
their capability of asking relevant
questions about the pain reported
by the patient. The result shows
that the majority of these nurses
consider that they don’t have
enough knowledge in the subject;
information about painphysiology
and pharmacology in basic nursing
education is inadequate.
Thus, to increase the quality care
of patients with pain, nurses
require more knowledge in the
subject.
