Sammanfattning
The Ädel reform was implemented
in Sweden in 1992, implying
the local authorities to have an
overall responsibility of the nursing
and social aspects for their
elderly citizens. The reform
implied a changed professional
role for the nurses. The purpose
of the study was to describe and
gain a deeper understanding of
the nurses´ consensus of their
profession. Six nurses constituted
the expert panel and were interviewed
with the Delphi method. The
results point out four fundamentals
namely, I. Medical competence:
The nurse has to rely on
her own judgment. II. Nursing
competence: The practical work
is the central issue. III. Pedagogical
competence: To teach, guide
and act as a role model for the
staff. IV. Personality: A genuine
interest for the elderly, mental
strength, confidence and independence
in the professional role.
The expectations and demands
placed upon the nurse in elder
care implies that a nurse with a
long and varied professional
experience is requested. To be a
nurse in elder care implies possibilities
for development in the
profession.
