Sammanfattning

This article is based on Arja Narinen's dissertation, Present content of the nurse manager's work and potential future changes in it: a study of the perceptions of nurse managers and directors of nursing who work in primary health care and specialised clinical care, University of Helsinki, 2000. Background: The work of the nurse manager has only been studied to a limited degree in Finland. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to clarify the content of the nurse manager's work and to analyse factors related to it. Methods: In the first phase of the study, a questionnaire was designed using the Delphi method. The sample consisted of nurse managers and directors of nursing (N = 1 812) from ten different hospital districts of the total of 21 Finnish hospital districts. The methods of analysis were Pearson's correlation coefficient, explorative factor analysis, chi2 test, t-test, one-way analysis of variance and logistic regression. Results: In Finland, nurse managers are responsible for tasks related to the nursing staff, budgeting and administration, as well as for collaboration and development, supervision and management, and clinical work. Nurse managers are involved in clinical nursing for about 50% of their working hours. Education and work experience correlate positively with nurse managers' skills and capabilities in their work. Conclusions: The results of the study do not support the idea of launching a separate educational programme for nurse managers.
