Sammanfattning

Introduction: The article describes the experience after using non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in an intensive care unit through six months. Material and methods: All patients admitted between January 1, 2002 and June 30, 2002 with severe respiratory failure, a total of eighty patients, were consecutively evaluated in order to establish whether NPPV-treatment was possible. Results: NPPV was attempted in nineteen patients. Twelve treatments were successful, seven failed. We present selected cases and graphic illustrations of the development of the blood-gas values during treatment. Discussion: The latest meta-analysis shows that the effect of NPPV is most convincing in patients suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), for whom both mortality, the need for mechanical ventilation, and the duration of admission were significantly reduced. Our study confirms that NPPV is suitable for the treatment of COPD-patients, but other respiratory problems have also been solved using this method. Indications and contraindications for NPPV are discussed and advice on NPPV-implementation is given. In addition, the possible reduction in duration of treatment with mechanical ventilation is estimated.
