Sammanfattning

Introduction: Surveillance of Legionella pneumonia gave suspicion of increased incidence in the area of Randers Health Board compared with the rest of Aarhus County. The aim was to describe the incidence of Legionella infections based on laboratory tests in the area of Aarhus County. Material and methods: Retrospective study collecting all laboratory data from Statens Serum Institut and Department of Microbiology, University Hospital of Aarhus between January 1996 and October 2000. Cases in Randers Health Board was described by their records according to cause of admission, travel related or nosocomiel infection and home address at time of infection. Possible clusters were visualised through GIS (Geographic Information System). Results: The incidence of Legionella infections in Randers Health Board (SIR=1.97) and in the town of Randers (SIR = 2.58) was increased compared to the rest of the county. The incidence in Randers Health Board increased with age. Median age was 67 years compared to 57 in the rest of the county. The annual incidence in the population of diagnostic testing was 0.3%. Discussion: The increased incidence in Randers Health Board could not be explained by differences in use of diagnostic testing, nosocomiel cases, travel related cases or outbreaks. The incidence was increased in all age groups and highest among the eldest. Causality needs further studies.
