Sammanfattning

Epidemiological studies based on large cohorts have provided valuable information on the risk factors for a number of the most common public health problems. The first cohorts were initiated around 1950 in the USA (the Framingham study) and Britain (the British doctors study). Since 1964 a number of cohort studies have been started in Denmark and have contributed documentation on the importance of smoking, hypertension, diabetes, serum cholesterol, and sedentary lifestyle to the development of coronary heart disease. The challenge in future will be both to utilise the existing cohorts and to establish new cohorts that could identify new risk factors.
