Sammanfattning
Introduction: Attempts to quantify clinical production have been done during the recent decade, e.g., by the development of diagnosis-related groups (DRG). However, only a few attempts have been made to quantify the resources needed to conduct an adequate postgraduate education of doctors. Our study attempted to quantify the resources allocated to medical postgraduate education up to the attainment of a specialty degree in a typical university department. Materials and methods: Our study included the number of doctors being educated, how much time was spent on teaching of theory, and the various types of clinical training, as well as what administrative incentives were in place to ensure adequate documentation of the qualifications achieved. Results: Approximately 15% of all daytime working hours, or 13% of all medical working hours, were allocated to educational activities. Discussion: The resources allocated to young doctors' medical postgraduate education should be made more easily ascertainable and included in the budget framework for each university department in order to ensure that adequate priority is given to this activity.
