Sammanfattning
Benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes is an age-related idiopathic epilepsy with charateristic seizures and EEG features. In the literature there is evidence for a good prognosis for the seizures, and it is necessary to treat only some of the children. There is evidence for treatment only with six months of sulthiam, and it will be necessary to do further randomized, controlled studies before a more generalized evidence-based recommendation can be made. There is a consensus for treatment with carbamazepine and valproate. The prognosis for cognitive development is more uncertain. It seems necessary to distinguish typical from atypical benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes, because the atypical form appears to have a poorer prognosis for both cognitive and behavioural development.
