Nowadays we see a lot of research in relation to nursing where interview is used as a method. Much of this research is inspired by Steinar Kvale’s interview method, but also other theoreticians have started to become a source of inspiration, e.g. Pierre Bourdieu. This article is a discussion of similarities and differences in Pierre Bourdieu’s and Steinar Kvale’s ways of carrying out and discussing interview research. The article shows many similarities in the two researchers’ way of thinking, but it also shows many differences, which mainly can be explained by their different educational background as sociologist and psychologist, respectively, and to the fact they are working within two different epistemological positions. Next step could be to analyze which scientific knowledge is obtainable using either Kvale’s or Bourdieu’s way of doing interviews, and under what premises that knowledge arise in relation to epistemological and methodological consistency, cogency, and transparency. And not least, what the different approaches contribute to in the academia of nursing.
