Sammanfattning

Days spent in the forest give dementia sufferers who live at home especially meaningful experiences, which they therefore remember better than indoor activities, and about which they communicate more readily verbally, within the group with both family and home helps. As well as getting exercise, they get to know each other better on walks and joint experiences of nature, which evoke memories of earlier stages in their lives. The article is based on a qualitative study of a forest day centre in the municipality of Hillerød in North Zealand. In 2002-04, an informal group of moderate to serious dementia sufferers who live at home were observed at the forest day centre and a traditional indoor day centre. In addition, personal interviews were carried out with participants, drivers, staff, family and day care personnel. The article points out that nurses employed in home care organisations and care centres as dementia consultants/coordinators can help to shift specialist development of initiatives for dementia sufferers past normal institutional thinking - out into the green outdoors. Dementia sufferers are thus encouraged to make use of their mental, social and physical resources, while their immediate family get a break and staff enjoy improved job satisfaction.
