Sammanfattning

Traditionally, only cold, liquid food is allowed following treatment for epistaxis, in order to avoid rebleeding. A survey carried out at Aarhus Hospital has investigated whether there is a link between type of diet and rebleeding in patients among patients admitted with epistaxis. Rebleeding has been defined as continuous, bloody dripping from the nose after primary haemostasis. During survey period, 162 patients were offered a diet of their choice. Sex, age, smoking habits, treatment and point of rebleeding were recorded. Of 127 cases of rebleeding, 45 patients showed no pronounced diet-related accumulation ( Initially excessive bleeding, treated with a balloon, is of the most significance in re-bleeding episodes during hospitalisation. Rebleeding occurs in 39 per cent of cases at night, when patients are not offered food. There is no evidence that the transfer to free choice of diet has led to an increase in the number of days of admission or the number of nosebleed patients who needed general anaesthesia. There was evidence of a slight accumulation of rebleedings related to diet, although there were no sure signs that hot food increased the risk more than cold. However, the response rate related to choice of diet was too low for any ultimate conclusion to be drawn.
