Sammanfattning

The article was motivated by an empirical analysis which showed that nurses' attitudes regarding obesity are incompatible with Ethical Guidelines for Nurses. The article describes four discourses on obesity. The discourses arose on the background of four different scientific theoretical traditions which form different conceptions of, and explanations for, obesity. The discourse analysis presents a metatheoretical perspective, enabling nurses to become aware of how attitudes to obesity can be regarded as relative. Their relativity renders them variable; i.e. they can be changed. Their relativity enables a nurse to encounter an obese patient contemplatively and openly. The nurse concerned will be in a position to meet the obese individual and evaluate possible treatments on the basis of a critical perspective which allows for change and improvement.
