Sammanfattning
This article focuses on the art of nursing - in this context, seen as the nurse's attention to the sensuous aspects of the relationship with the patient; compare Kari Martinsen's description of the concept "to see with the heart's eye." A field study based on a phenomenological hermeneutic approach has led to the following conclusion:
The sensuous dimension seems to be fundamental to the relationship with the patient
Sensuousness is the point of nursing staff's communication with respect to the patient.
Sensuousness is not expressed amongst the staff.
These findings indicate that the sensuous aspect of nursing is not consciously accepted as a means for achieving technically relevant knowledge about the patient. It seems likely that the nurse's sensuous abilities derive from their everyday experience and from arbitrary technical experience.
The field study was prepared applying a combination of Steinar Kvale's philosophy regarding the qualitative research interview, and Søren Kristiansen's and Hanne Katrine Krogstrup's approach to participating observation. For a few days a nurse in a general medical ward was followed during the morning care of patients, and the results have been produced on the basis of the collected empiricism in interaction with a theoretical preconception.
