Sammanfattning

Psychiatric patients often lack the mental energy to take exercise, and combined with the sedative effect of psychoactive drugs a vicious circle begins; of physical inactivity, loss of condition and social isolation. The authors investigate the incipient evidence of the positive significance of physical exercise to psychiatric patients. A survey of psychiatric services at Vejle County reveals a lack of focus on physical exercise as an integral element of treatment and as a form of social rehabilitation. The authors recommend the planning and integration of physical activity during initial psychiatric treatment because exercise promotes network development and destigmatisation, as well as improving general health and preventing lifestyle-related illness. The article contains suggestions regarding the introduction of exercise to the psychiatric treatment environment.
