Historically, supervision has had a
great significance in vocational
training and in the professional
training program. I have performed
a study of the dialogue between
supervisor (nurse) and student in
the training program in Nursing.
There is little existing documentation
about how the supervision
dialogue between the contact nurse
and the student is accomplished
and what it consists of. On the
other hand it exists a lot of documentation
about what supervision
is and how it should be performed.
The basis of the study is four
observations of the supervision dialogue
between contact nurse and
student. The observations were carried
out at different wards at a hospital
in Troms County, Norway.
The result showed that the awareness
of the dialogue as a significant
part of the learning process
differs from ward to ward. Through
articulate knowledge the students
get the possibility to reflect upon
their actions. The dialogues left no
room for reflections; it was centered
on messages and explanations.
The contact nurses expressed a
wish to get further education in
supervision; only one had participated
in a few courses. The result
of my analysis showed that the dialogues
was not organised or planned.
Only one of the wards in my
study emphasised the supervision
dialogue and was aware of the
importance of letting the students
speak about their experiences.
