Sammanfattning

The quality of all Bachelor candidate theses (n=39) at the Red Cross University College of Nursing in Stockholm during one term 2004 were evaluated. The theses were systematically reviewed by using a criteria guide developed for the study. The evaluation was performed in two steps. At first 21 separate parts in the thesis were evaluated and thereafter the logical structure. Each area was assessed with a plus or a minus. Finally, the supervisors and examiners had the opportunity to reflect on the results. Almost all theses were relevant for nursing and most fulfilled the criteria for reference management, formalities and language. Approximately half of the thesis fulfilled criteria for theoretical framework, results, discussion of results and conclusion. The greatest shortcomings were in areas of data analysis, abstract, ethical considerations and the logical structure of the thesis. There were no relations between the results and if the thesis had one or two authors. To improve the quality of the thesis it is important to develop the education in scientific methodology, define distinct criteria, develop a system that facilitates the writing process and continues in-service training.
