Sammanfattning
Objective: This article describes how in one gynaecological unit, accelerated surgical procedures have been introduced for women with ovarian cancer, and how this has affected the immediate postoperative period for the patients. The time spent by nursing staff and the type of nursing tasks required, have been compared with that of conventional care.
Data from 69 patients with ovarian cancer or initial stages hereof, show that hospitalisation was reduced from a median of six to a median of five days. The patients suffered less pain and less nausea, they were eating earlier and were mobilised more quickly than those receiving conventional treatment.
The time spent and the type of nursing tasks performed were recorded from the time of admission to the time of discharge of 10 patients before, and 10 patients after, the introduction of accelerated surgical procedures. The time spent on preoperative care increased from 122 to 138 minutes per patient, whilst the time spent on postoperative care decreased from 1,999 to 753 minutes per patient. Time spent per patient per day was significantly reduced from 229 to 137 minutes.
