Sammanfattning

In intensive care units, there are numbers of patients with very complex care problems. Several studies have shown a significant benefit in having a primary nurse (PN). The aim of this study was to identify ICUs in Sweden employing any type of PN and to study the associated benefits, as described by nurses with that kind of experience. A questionnaire was designed to identify which units worked with PN and then interview ten nurses from those units. The questionnaire was sent to 79 ICUs, of which 65 answered. Of these, 23 had PNs, 22 stated that they operated some other form of nursing model and 20 stated that they did not operate primary nursing. Much data was collected through the open answers in the questionnaires and from the interviews. The main category was «patient safety» with 12 lower categories. It was shown that by having PNs in ICU, their care can reduce patient suffering and improve patient quality of life. According to the nurses, other benefits were that it was easier to raise difficult ethical questions and that the safety of the patients improved.
