Sammanfattning
Introduction: No available data tell about the reason for illness related absenteeism in elementary school over a longer period and how often a schoolchild is absent due to illnesses in Denmark. The purpose of this study has been to obtain and use these data for a study next school year about hand hygiene and illness related absenteeism in elementary schools.
Methods: 793 schoolchildren, grade 0-9 incl., from two schools were asked to fill out a questionnaire every time they were absent due to illness according to the official protocol through a three months period. Furthermore the children were asked about their habits regarding washing hands during school time.
Results: With a total response rate of 71% to the questionnaire about absents due to illnesses, 45% of the cases were due to respiratory illness, 12% to gastrointestinal illness, 1% to skin illness, 9% to other illnesses and 34% were none-illness cases. Regarding hand washing most children wash their hands: 1-2 times during school hours, always after visiting the bathroom, once in a while before lunch, never after lunch, always before cooking in school and never before leaving school.
Conclusions: Respiratory illness is the main cause of illness related absenteeism among schoolchildren, and a schoolchild has an average of 0,66 episode of illness related absenteeism per month.
