Sammanfattning

The article presents the results of a randomized Danish intervention study involving mandatory hand washing among pupils. Significantly, the school in which the intervention took place (290 pupils) had 22 per cent fewer episodes of illness absence and 26 per cent fewer illness absence days than the control school (362 pupils). The odds ratio for illness absence was 69 per cent for the intervention school compared to the control school. Conclusion: Focus on hand washing has shown to decrease illness absence among Danish pupils. Regular teaching hand hygiene and role models in schools are needed. Each school must create their own hygiene policy and implement the hygiene inspections at schools. Satisfactory physical conditions for hand hygiene must be achieved.
