Sammanfattning
Reliable biological markers are valuable tools for finding persons with harmful alcohol consumption. Traditional markers like AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), GGT (gamma-glutamyltransferase), MCV (mean corpuscular volume) have a limited sensitivity and specificity. CDT (carbohydrate deficient transferrin) has a very high specificity, but a limited sensitivity.
B-PEth (phosphatidylethanol), a direct ethanol metabolite, is another alcohol marker reported to have almost 100% sensitivity and specificity.
The aim of this study was to compare B-PEth with other markers in a clinical practice at a health care center.
Most of the examined patients were appealing for a new driving license after a DWI offence. Almost half of the patients had an alcohol disorder diagnosis. In 34% of the tests at least one alcohol marker showed values above the reference level. B-PEth did not identify more persons with harmful alcohol consumption than did CDT. Nevertheless, B-PEth seems to be a valuable by detecting recent alcohol consumption.
