Sammanfattning
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the efficiency of a two-year psychoeducational multifamily group (PEMFG). The patients were hospitalised,
suffering from different psychoses and participated with their families. PEMFG is described as an effective evidence based treatment. This
study draws on theories about: symptom management, psychoeducational interventions, the vulnerability/stress model, expressed emotion in the
family and psychosocial functioning. Nine patients (4 women and 5 men) with a long-term psychiatric illness and their family members (N=17)
were recruited to two different groups after giving written consent. The study has a pretest-posttest design and lacks a control group. Global
Assessment of Functioning Split Version (S-GAF) measured severity of symptoms and functioning. Perceptions of relationships were measured by
felt Expressed Emotion Rating Scale (FEERS) and satisfaction measured by Users Satisfaction. The results show that the patients had a significant
improvement both in symptoms and psychosocial functioning. The patients’ perceptions of worry and control in their family members were
significant reduced. The families’ perceptions of the patient were stable. The results showed a high level of user satisfaction and perception of
better copingstrategies. The family members experienced that they were both seen and heard and that that were an important resource in the
treatment.
