Sammanfattning
The correlation between family intervention and an improved course of psychotic disorders is
well documented. There are, however, few studies which have specifically examined participants’
experiences. This study explores the subjective experiences of three girls (aged 19-26) suffering
from a psychosis and five of their familymembers (aged 42-61). Data collection was done through
qualitative research interviews, and data was analysed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic
approach.
The findings suggest that knowledge, particularly experiential knowledge, contributes towards
understanding, management and a sense of accomplishment. Patients experienced the group format
as challenging in the beginning. However, over time the sense of community enhancing
problemsolving capacities and providing social support.
