Screening för bukaortaaneurysm i Uppsala. Goda erfarenheter av de första fyra åren - resten av Sverige är på väg
Sammanfattning
Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a common cause of death among elderly men. The best therapy for AAA is pre-symptomatic, elective surgery in appropriately selected individuals. However, most AAAs remain undiagnosed and a majority of patients with ruptured AAA die without surgery. To reduce the high mortality, early detection by screening has been advocated, and several randomized trials have shown that screening saves lives cost-effectively. Since 2006 the County of Uppsala invites all 65-year-old men for AAA-screening. In this paper, we describe our experiences from the first four years of screening and the current development in Sweden.
