Sammanfattning

A centralised screening program for abdominal aortic aneurysms in Stockholm. Experiences from the first 18 months Screening of AAA reduces aneurysm-related mortality in elderly men. In a majority of Swedish regions screening is organized and supervised by vascular surgeons. In Stockholm County a centralized model was introduced in 2010, with solid support of a specific web-based program. This screening model is unique for AAA screening programs in Sweden, since it is organized outside the vascular departments and hospital-based ultrasound units. The supervision of the program is based within the organization in the regional program for screening of cancer. A council responsible for the quality of the activities performed within the screening program supports this organization. The prevalence of AAA among screened men in Stockholm was 1.4 percent. A high proportion of these were small aneurysms. The findings correspond well with other recent reports. Future perspectives are to identify why 20 percent of men decline to participate in the program. We will also continue to participate in the development of national scientific projects with other regions in Sweden.
