The article presents a critical view of patient education and discusses the following issues: How can patient education harm the self image of patients? Is it possible that the nurse, as a healthy individual and health expert, may function as a role model for patients undergoing education? And how can patient education contribute to risk of increased social inequality? The article takes as its starting point qualitative Danish studies and American nurse and bioethnicist, Barbara K Redman's proposal for an ethical framework for patient education.
