Sammanfattning
Genetic factors are important for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and related conditions, and it is crucial to better understand the complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors contributing to these diseases. In the last 3-4 years, we have seen a remarkable development within population-based genetics, and through the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) we now know of hundreds of genetic variants robustly associated with CVD and related conditions. In the coming few years, we are facing a rapid development with exponentially increasing amounts of data from sequencing methods, but also from new techniques for analyzing mRNA (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics) and metabolites (metabolomics). As a result, we have to be prepared to adapt from a primarily hypothesis-driven and locally focused research philosophy towards a more hypothesis-generating and international, collaborative way of thinking about biomedical population-based research in general.
