Sammanfattning

The new, shared emergency departments emphasise evaluation, prioritising and stabilising the severely injured patient and the critically ill based on the patient's symptoms and vital signs. Patients can be admitted at the department for up to 48 hours, and significant numbers of them complete their treatment and are discharged directly from the shared emergency department. Nurses and physicians working in emergency departments must become specialists in receiving acute patients, triage and stabilising patients. This requires the use of close interdisciplinary teamwork. The establishment of this type of department places demands on health professionals to acquire new skills and collaborative methods. Not least among these requirements are the nurses' skills. The Central Denmark Region and the North Denmark Region are collaborating in training emergency department nurses and physicians. The development of emergency training and parallel development of shared emergency departments has produced experience and knowledge that should be used in establishing a national training program for emergency department nurses.
