Sammanfattning

Physician access to information about the patient’s current drug list is a prerequisite for safe drug prescribing. It’s a good thing if different doctors, independent of speciality, can use a common database when prescribing drugs to a patient. However, when physicians obtain such total information about a patient’s prescription, this raises issues about responsibility. Doctors show a variation in how they understand this responsibility and the strategies they use to manage it. Insofar as the extent of this perceived responsibility varies, it could constitute a threat to safe patient care. The Network for the Swedish Drug Therapeutics Committees (LOK) has compiled a document with recommended guidelines for physicians managing a common electronic patient drug list. Such a list, including all the drugs prescribed for a patient from various health care providers, will not be used unless it is reliable, updated and accepted by physicians with various understandings of how to manage it. We hope that this article will lead to a debate about these guidelines in the interest of improving the quality of health care.
