Sammanfattning
Background: Some studies have been done in Norway earlier about how nurses develop practical competence, but only a few studies have
dealt with the pediatric nurse.
Aim: The aim is to describe how pediatric nurses describe experience of their own competence and development in practical competence in the
clinical practice. The purpose is to find new knowledge about developing practical competence.
Methods: This is a qualitative study. Data collection was conducted from semi- structured interviews from seven pediatric nurses, transcribed
and analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Nurses from one district hospital and one university hospital from the southern part of Norway
participated in this study.
Findings: The practical context is complex. The pediatric nurse develops practical competence in different ways; reflection with other nurses
or colleagues, discussion in the ward or by counseling. It is important to be close to the practice and to work with the patients. Organizational
factors such as experienced and inexperienced nurses working together seem important to give the patients a defensible nursing.
Conclusion: The clinical practice is complex. The competence level of the nurse depends on the practical context, the previous experience of
the nurse and what kind of nursing skills the patient situation requires.
