Regional guidelines for preventative nephrology have been well received
Roughly 11 % of the population suffers from chronic kidney disease (CKD), amounting to about 200?000 people in the Southern Region of Sweden. Patients with CKD have a higher overall mortality, especially from cardiovascular disease. The annual mortality rate in the Swedish dialysis population is about 20 %. In a primary care population in Norway every 5th person with diabetes or hypertension and every 10th person over the age of 55 years had lost at least half their renal function. Recently, in the Southern Region, eGFR was introduced every time P-Creatinine and/or P-Cystatin C were ordered. Concomitantly, regional guidelines for preventive nephrology were developed in multiprofessional and multidisciplinary cooperation. Our guidelines use eGFR, albuminuria and age to stratify patients with CKD. These guidelines have been well received among nephrologists and general practitioners, largely due to the high degree of involvement and participation during the entire process.
