Sammanfattning

Since several decades Malmö city in Sweden has shown increasing inequities in health. Inspired by the WHO-report Closing the gap in a generation the local politicians decided in 2010 to set up a commission on social determinants for health. Over the course of two years the Malmö Commission´s fourteen members and Chairman and Secretariat, along with many other researchers and experts established in national and international research published 32 scientific reports in which a total of more than 200 proposed actions were presented. In March 2014 the local politicians decided to carry out 69 activities based on the proposed 74 recommendations from the commission’s 2013 final report. My conclusions as chairman of the commission are the following: (1) Reliable data on health and it´s social determinants are of invaluable importance for decisions regarding health in all policies; (2) Members of a commission shall be both scientists and practitioners; (3) Qualified competence in epidemiology, sociology and health economics is necessary; (4) For the future: Create a permanent function for monitoring of health, socials determinants and evaluation of the continuous work.
