Sammanfattning
The number of people from EU countries in Eastern Europe begging on the
streets and squares in Western Europe has increased significantly since
2007. The aim of this article is to shed light on the state of knowledge about
modern begging and touching a series of moral dilemmas highlighted in the
research. I assume a Nordic and especially Swedish perspective, but outlooks
are also made to Europe. Underlying causes and extent and management
of the problem is discussed, as well as the ongoing controversy about
concepts and classifications. In research has legal and judicial aspects of
beggary been treated, as well as the political and mass media discourse.
Furthermore, investigations consider examine how life is portrayed for poor
EU citizens who are begging in the Nordic region and they treat relations between
majority society and beggars. A perspective of the research includes
street begging and activities in the public sphere as a social problem. In the
end, are also discussed what measures can yield results.
