Sammanfattning

When citizens of Stockholm were interviewed concerning their experiences of panhandling, the matter turned out to be inseparable from conceptions of Sweden as the place in the world were begging does not belong. An overarching narrative alleged that the presence of begging EU citizens was threatening the Swedish "social contrac" between the welfare state and the individual Swede, which up until now had guaranteed the perception of an ethical order where Swedish citizens were righteously relieved from personal moral responsibility for vulnerable strangers and where structural poverty could not materialize in the embodied Swedish life world. The encounter with the begging EU citizen becomes a confrontation with the moral foundations of the Swedish identity.
