Sammanfattning
Oral health may become compromised with increasing
age due to reduced salivary secretion rate,
impaired oral hygiene, frequent calorie-rich meals
and an altered biofilm composition. More than
50 percent of all individuals over 75 years have experienced
root caries and around 25 percent suffer
from gingivitis and oral candidosis. With populationbased
and individual strategies applied within a holistic
perspective, these conditions are largely preventable.
Although the quality of evidence generally
is lower for elderly people compared to children
and young adults, there is scientific support for the
use of saliva stimulation, mechanical plaque control
and increased exposure to topical fluorides. For
secondary prevention of root caries, there is weak
support for high fluoride regimes, such as high fluoride
toothpaste and fluoride varnish, whilst there is
little evidence for the use of chemical plaque control.
The principal option for candida-infections is
improved oral hygiene routines. To bridge the gaps
of knowledge in frail elderly, further clinical research
of good quality is urgently needed.
